between spinous processes to restore intervertebral height and reduce the pressure on the spinal nerves as they exit the spine. Approved in 2005 by the FDA, the X Stop has been widely used in back surgery with the majority of patients experiencing significant, and sustained relief from spinal stenosis symptoms such as pain and paraesthesia. The procedure to insert the X Stop takes around 45-90 minutes and either one or two of the
devices may be fitted depending on the number of spinal levels that are stenotic. The surgeon will use a fluoroscope during the procedure to ensure correct placement of the X Stop implant. Complications are possible and the device can malfunction, making further surgery necessary. Recovery times are often two-six weeks with this type of back surgery.
